From the Pauline Magazine: He volunteered for service the day after war was declared. He afterwards got his commission in the Norfolk Regiment, served in France, and won the Military Cross. He was wounded just before entering a German trench, and was then reported missing. Subsequently he was officially presumed killed.

His Colonel wrote: ” He was one of my best officers and a great personal friend of mine; he had been with us since the early days of the regiment. He was much loved by us all and his men alike.”
