D.S.O.; V.C
Date of death: 29 March 1918
Age at death: 41
Place of burial: (No known grave.) Arras Memorial, France.
‘In May 1917 he was dangerously wounded at Bullecourt and received the D.S.O for gallantry and leadership … He was a keen sportsman. He rowed, boxed, played cricket and football and was a straight rider to the hounds … He was a splendid wing forward in an exceptional School XV, fast enough to have played outside and never sparing himself for a moment right up to ‘no side’. Though inclined to be idle in school hours, he was very far from unintelligent; indeed, his abilities were decidedly above the average, and he could be a distinct thorn in the flesh of certain masters who mistook him for a fool.’ Pauline Magazine
